I understand that groups like to have their own space/closed sessions from time to time, which is why I added the group Mode to SimCom X.

I also know that group Mode only works when you know the connection details of another online user.

Everybody isn't always online, so sometimes clients don't know who to connect to.

So I've written the SimCom X Group Server.

It's a fairly basic app written in .NET 6.

This means it is cross platform, able to run on Windows, Mac and Linux (including a Raspberry Pi).

The idea is that the server is up 24/7 allowing users to have a go-to place to connect.

Once started the server will show the IP and port, which a user can input into the IP and Port section on the SimCom X Pilot client Main screen.

The client doesn't actually connect to the group server, but rather speaks to it and asks who else is online.

The server then sends a list of everyone who is online and the Pilot client uses that list to connect to each user in the list (P2P).

This way if the server goes offline for any reason, clients will not lose their connection to each other.

If you'd like to try the server you can download it from the link below.

It will need to have a UDP port forwarded for it and allowed through firewalls etc, in order for users to speak to it.

The default port for it is UDP 7600.

How do you know if people can connect, I hear you ask?

If a SimCom X client is able to speak to the group server, the clients status light will turn green.

Those running the server will also be able to see a user has been added in the server console window (or server log file if run from a console and not a desktop environment).

I hope it's of some use.

Hey Roo,

Downloaded the group server. Port forwarded UDP 7600 in my router and allowed the exe through the windows firewall, however nothing happens when I click the exe file. Just a flash. Am I doing something wrong?

It should... Open a console window.

I wonder if an antivirus is marking it as something bad and putting it in quarantine?

I'll have another look once I get a few minutes spare.

Just a thought Tony.

Do you have .NET6 or later installed?

https://dotnet.microsoft.com/en-us/download/dotnet/7.0

SimCom X uses .NET4, but I built the group server with .NET6 to make it cross platform.

SimCom X Group Server Version 1.0.0.5 seems to be working OK for me.

Added a few changes, including the ability to change port and set a motd.

Type HELP in the console window for details.

Hey Roo,

Thanks for resetting my account.

As for the group server software, It still only flashes when clicking the exe file. I did have NET 6.0 and downloaded and installed NET 7.0 but the same things occurs. Turned off windows defender to check if anti virus was causing the problem with no success.

Can you run it from a CMD line Tony?

Is there anything in Server_log.txt?

Roo,

Was not able to run it from the cmd line either. Here's a screenshot. I'm sure it's probably something I'm doing wrong.

There are uppercase characters in the app name too.

Try    SimComX_Group_Server.exe

Tested fine here (1.0.0.106), a minor issue only: MOTD doesn't show on simcomx(pilot) v. 3.1.1.116

cheers

Roo,

Got the group server working. I was mistaken. I did not have NET6 installed. Using the uppercase letters with the .exe showed I had V 3.1.31 and 7.0 installed. Downloaded version 6 and it started working. Thanks for the help.

I also noticed that Gian.

I've got a newer Pilot client and group server I'll release shortly, I'm just running a few more tests with them.

The motd works with them. 👍

I have a group server running at..

IP: slash.dotdash.space

Port: 7600

I think the motd should work with that if you wanted to try.

I assume SimCom X voice is all now working ok?

Roo,

Last time I flew with my flying partner was on last Saturday. At that time we were able to connect and fly on Join Group with our respective IP's. Communication was slightly garbled but got better over time. Using SCX I could see him in the list but he couldn't see me. This was on ver 114 I believe. We'll be able to test the latest ver on Sat and let you know how it goes.
